Pakistan Water Crisis

Pakistan Water Crisis during the 2025 monsoon season has increased to an alarming level. Heavy rains have occurred in different parts of the country during the recent monsoon season, which has filled rivers and streams.

9.04 million acre feet (MAF) of water has been discharged into the Arabian Sea from the Kotri point from July 1 to August 20, the Irrigation Department said, Another 4 to 5 million acre feet of water is likely to be discharged as water flow from Swat, Kashmir and other hilly areas continues to flow into the rivers.

The country’s major water reservoirs, including Tarbela, Rawal, Khanpur and Simli dams, have reached their full capacity. The Mangla Dam is 75 percent full, in this situation there is no alternative arrangement to store the excess water, due to which the excess water is being wasted.

According to the latest report released on the water reservoirs from the Kotri Barrage;
“During July 1-10, 0.60 million acre feet of water will be released, July 11-20 1.11 million acre feet, July 21-31 2.60 million acre feet, July 1-10 3.12 million acre feet and August 11-20 1.61 million acre feet.”

These figures are proof that Pakistan’s effective management of water resources and capacity to store excess water is still inadequate.-If immediate steps are not taken to save water from wastage, the country may face a severe water crisis, water experts.

If work is not done on the construction of new dams and improvement of the existing system in a timely manner, water problems will increase, water experts. Construction of new dams is the need of the hour to prevent water wastage, water experts.
