Nowadays people in Pakistan and around the world are complaining a lot that their email accounts have been hacked. Cybersecurity experts say that this is quite dangerous. Why? Because if a hacker takes control of your email, he can also access your banking apps, shopping websites and social media accounts.
Why do hackers target email accounts?
Your email is the “main gate” of your digital life. If this gate is opened, the hacker can steal your personal information or take money or details from your friends and family by sending them fake messages.
What to do if your email gets hacked – Step-by-Step Guide
1. First of all change your password
As soon as you suspect that your email has been hacked, change your password immediately. The new password should be strong – i.e. use numbers, capital letters, symbols – and be different from the old passwords.
2. Sign out from all devices
Just changing the password is not enough. It is possible that the hacker is still logged in to your email. Go to Settings and use the option of “sign out of all devices”.
3. Check Auto-Forwarding
Sometimes hackers set such rules that your emails get automatically forwarded to some other email. Check the settings and if there is any such rule which you did not make, then delete it immediately.
4. Delete Suspicious Filters
Hackers also set filters due to which important emails are not visible to you. Check email filters or rules and delete those which seem unknown.
5. Inform your contacts
If a hacker has sent fake or scam messages through your email, immediately inform your contacts not to open any link or send money.
6. Secure linked accounts
Often people use the same password everywhere – which is a completely wrong habit. Immediately change the password of your other accounts (like Facebook, bank apps, etc.) as well.
Cybercrime cases are increasing
Cybercrime is growing very fast in cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. FIA says that people often use the same password everywhere and do not turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) – which makes it easy for hackers.
Tips to stay safe
– Use different and strong passwords for every account.
– Make sure to enable 2FA (two-factor authentication).
– Keep recovery email and phone number updated.
– Check account activity regularly.
In today’s digital age, your email is not just an inbox, but the most important part of your online life. If you take small precautions, you will not only be saved from getting hacked, but if it ever happens, you will also be able to recover quickly.
