Sheikh Hasina

According to details, a months-long investigative report by “The Daily Star” has revealed that former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina allowed security forces to use live fire during public protests in July. The report cites a verified call recording, in which Hasina can be heard giving the order to “shoot directly” to crush the protests.

According to the report, “After this order, state agencies increased the deployment of lethal weapons against protesters, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Sources say that the intensity with which the forces took action against the protests in the capital Dhaka and other cities on the night of July 10 was part of a pre-planned strategy.”

The investigative report said that the call recording, which has been verified by independent experts, appears to have been made at a time when anti-government protests in the country were intensifying. In the recording, Sheikh Hasina allegedly instructs top security officials to fire live ammunition at protesters.

Political and human rights observers have called the revelations worrisome and have called for an immediate judicial investigation and international response. Several international organizations have expressed concern over possible human rights violations in Bangladesh.

So far, there has been no official response from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina or her party, the Awami League, to the report. However, some leaders have dismissed the report as “political propaganda.”

The revelations have deepened the political crisis in the country and it remains to be seen whether Bangladesh’s judiciary or the international community will take any formal action in the matter.
